At AK Ghosh Memorial School, we recently had the privilege of conducting a workshop for Class 6 parents on the crucial topic of "Impact of Using Digital Devices on Mental Health for Children." In today’s digital age, the use of technology is an inevitable part of children’s lives, but the effects on their mental health often raise concerns. The goal of this workshop, led by Dr. Surabhi Ghosh and Ms. Arpita Roy Chowdhury, was to address these concerns, offer insights, and provide practical tips for parents to better understand how to navigate the challenges that come with children’s exposure to digital devices.

How the Parents Got Helped

Our workshop served as a valuable platform for parents to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of digital devices on their children's mental well-being. Dr. Surabhi Ghosh and Ms. Arpita Roy Chowdhury shared expert knowledge on the various aspects of screen time and its potential effects on cognitive development, sleep patterns, social skills, and emotional health. The interactive session enabled parents to engage in meaningful discussions, ask questions, and share their own experiences.

Throughout the workshop, we highlighted strategies for setting healthy boundaries and promoting balance between digital usage and other important activities, such as outdoor play, family time, and academic work. Parents left with a clearer understanding of how they can create a healthier environment for their children while fostering digital literacy and responsibility.

Case Studies and Real-Life Examples

A significant part of the workshop involved discussing case studies that illustrated the various scenarios of children dealing with issues arising from excessive screen time. These real-life examples helped parents to connect the information presented with real-world situations, making the topic more relatable.

From a case study where a child’s emotional health was severely impacted by excessive gaming to another example where poor sleep habits due to screen time caused difficulties in focus and academic performance, these stories offered practical insights. Parents were able to grasp the nuanced effects of digital overuse and understand how to prevent or mitigate similar situations in their own homes.

Interactive Sessions and Activities

One of the most engaging aspects of the workshop was the interactive sessions. Dr. Ghosh and Ms. Roy Chowdhury encouraged parents to actively participate in group discussions, where they reflected on their children's screen time habits, challenges they face, and the solutions they have tried. These open discussions allowed for the exchange of ideas and fostered a sense of community among the parents.

Additionally, we conducted activities designed to help parents assess their children’s screen time usage and mental well-being. Through hands-on exercises, parents learned how to identify warning signs of digital addiction, such as irritability, withdrawal, or poor academic performance. They also explored techniques for reducing screen time and replacing it with more enriching activities.

The workshop, led by Dr. Surabhi Ghosh and Ms. Arpita Roy Chowdhury, was a huge success, with parents leaving more informed and empowered to make positive changes in their children’s digital habits. We believe that understanding the effects of digital devices on mental health is a crucial first step in helping children navigate today’s tech-driven world. By offering tools and strategies to manage screen time effectively, we hope to encourage a healthier, balanced lifestyle for both children and their families.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents who participated, and we look forward to continuing our journey of supporting the mental well-being of our students and their families.

Stay tuned for future workshops as we continue to explore important topics to help foster healthy development in children!
